It’s Time to Brave the Cave Once More

img_3639

The last time I went into the cave was three years ago. No, not a physical cave, but a figurative one.

In January 2014, I had just relinquished my pastoral position, and Archippus Awakening was to be the next assignment. With no idea of the next steps, I retreated into a period I termed as ‘cave time‘ to rest and reconsolidate, and more importantly, to seek the Lord. It was also a time for me to pen down my thoughts and direction as I studied more about what Archippus Awakening would be.

That was three years ago. And a lot has happened since then. [Read 2014: A Year of Baby Steps2015: A Year of Sowing, and 2016: Entering the 3rd Year with Expectation] Needless to say, it has not been easy. In fact, it has been extremely demanding and tiring! But I must quickly add that it has also been very exciting and fulfilling. The challenge, always, is to discern when I have relied on my own strength, and when I have rested in His. Without doubt, I ran very  hard in 2016. And it seems that the lanes have all been marked out for me in 2017.

But first – cave time.

Yes. For the next three months, I will be taking it a little easier. Apart from weekend ministry engagements that I have accepted (see Ministry Schedule), the weekdays will be spent reading, resting and recuperating. I have already begun doing that and I am enjoying the additional ‘space’, both in my schedule and in my mind.

This does not mean I am not working at all, for the assignment of Archippus Awakening continues (AWE2017 is up next: 17-19 Feb!). I am just taking things at a much slower pace – a slow jog, if you will.

In this mode, I get to draw and drink more deeply from the fountains of living water, reconnect with Serene and the children, enjoy coffee with friends and kingdom connections, and more critically, to be strengthened and directed for the way ahead. With a clearer mind, I also hope to write an accompanying volume to Say To Archippus, so that we can help more know and fulfil their God-given kingdom assignments.

Yes, it is time to brave the cave once more, to be willing to unplug from the buzz and the noise. Not necessarily easy or natural for one as task-oriented as I am. And yet, this is something that must be done. So, cave time, here I come!

Archippus Awakening: Partner Me to Reach & Awaken More in the Body of Christ!

LATEST UPDATE: Chinese simultaneous translation provided!

After a season of being invited by churches to share Archippus Awakening, it is our turn to invite the churches to our very own “AWAKENED. ALIGNED. ASSIGNED.” one-day seminar on Saturday, 3 December, at Sengkang Methodist Church. As shared in Rosh Hashanah 5777, Silver Trumpets & Rehoboth, it is time to boldly trumpet this clarion call of awakening towards kingdom assignments to many as possible.

But this task of rallying and gathering is not mine alone.

“But the Spirit of the LORD came upon Gideon; then he blew the trumpet, and the Abiezrites gathered behind him. And he sent messengers throughout all Manasseh, who also gathered behind him. He also sent messengers to Asher, Zebulun, and Naphtali; and they came up to meet them.” Judges 6:34-35

When Gideon blew the trumpet, members of his clan were the first to gather to him. From these, he sent out messengers to gather even more from the other tribes. Similarly, as I have been sounding the alarm, there have been many who have resonated and aligned with the message of Archippus Awakening. These are to be the messengers who will in turn send out invitations to even more churches.

For sure, I cannot reach everyone. But with the help of fellow Archippuses, with your help, we can reach more!

By God’s grace, registration has been encouraging so far, with representations from more than 40 churches! With so many churches in Singapore, even if only one member comes from one church, the hall will be filled to overflowing! More easily said than done, I know, as Singaporeans are busy people, spoilt for choice where Christian meetings and offerings are concerned. What’s more, those who need to be awakened are the toughest to bring to an Awakening Event!

Even so, if the Lord has already declared this to be a season of Rehoboth, of spaciousness and fruitfulness, then I am holding on to His word and faithfulness. I believe that if we do our part, He will more than do His part to fulfil what He has declared!

Latest Update: Chinese simultaneous translation available!

I invite you to join me in this assignment. I have already sounded the trumpet, and will continue to do so. I’m counting on you to be the messenger to relay and rebroadcast this message for a further and wider reach to both English and Chinese congregations! Spread the word. Share on social media platforms. WhatsApp or email your leaders and friends. Write a blog post. Whatever – just get the message out!

ACS Boy Publishes Chinese Book? The End Is Nigh!

Note: This post was first shared on the Archippus Awakening website. But since this is such a milestone for me, I thought it’d be good to share it here too. Need all the prayers I can get – hahaha!

I am sure we already know this: God’s timing is perfect and He has a great sense of humour!

The moment I was ready to announce the book commissioning of the Chinese version of SAY TO ARCHIPPUS, this meme made its rounds on social media:

IMG_4787

And now, there will be an ACS boy who will be self-publishing a Chinese book! Truly, with God, all things are possible! And yes, the end is indeed nigh.

Those who know me will understand why this is an absolute step of faith. I can’t speak Chinese to save my life, let alone teach and preach this message of Archippus Awakening! However, following the encouraging reception of SAY TO ARCHIPPUS, I received requests to translate it into Mandarin. After prayerful consideration, the Lord connected me with the right people, and the work on 要对亚基布说 began.

STA Chinese Horizontal

On 5 September 2016, 要对亚基布说, the Chinese version of SAY TO ARCHIPPUS, will be commissioned! YOU ARE INVITED to stand with me as we launch this Chinese version that evening 8pm at 15 Playfair Road. FGA@PLAYFAIR, Studio 6 at Level 4. Singapore 367987 (light meal served from 6:45pm). REGISTER HERE so we have a better idea of numbers for planning and catering. Thanks!

To celebrate this milestone of Archippus Awakening, we are offering a Pre-Publication Special of S$10.00 (usual $16) for orders received before 15 August 2016.  Take advantage of this special price before the book goes to print (hint: you won’t get it at this price ever again). Place your orders at tinyurl.com/stachinese, self-collection at the Book Commissioning Event.

[Read SAY TO ARCHIPPUS: Book Reviews]

As you read this, I invite you to partner me in this effort. Although doors have opened for me to speak in more Chinese churches of late, my exposure to Chinese congregations is still very limited. This is where you come in. Share this post with Chinese pastors, leaders or members so that more will be aware of Archippus Awakening, 唤醒亚基布, and what God wants to say to Archippus through the book 要对亚基布说. Direct enquiries to me at archippusawakening@gmail.com. Who knows how the Lord will lead for us to work together with these Chinese contacts so that more may be awakened, aligned and assigned for Jesus and His kingdom!

I still can’t believe that this is happening! All I know is that in and through my weakness, God will show forth His might and strength that He will receive all honour and glory. Surely, if God can speak through a donkey, He can awaken Chinese Archippuses through an ACS boy!

Thanks for your partnership and for your prayers (much needed!) – especially for the gift of tongues.

You Are Invited To Archippus Awakening’s Awakening Event: AWE2016

IMG_1837
Kingdom Worldview Seminar 19 & 20 Feb 2016

If you have been following this blog for a while, you would be aware of my present assignment in Archippus Awakening. What you may not be as aware of is that I have been proclaiming this message for the past two years, and by the Lord’s grace, doors have been opened for me to share this with many churches. Whether camps, retreats or seminars, I have come to regard these as Awakening Events (AWE); or simply, platforms for me to awaken Archippuses that these may know and fulfil their God-given kingdom assignments.

Last year, Archippus Awakening organised our very own Awakening Event, AWE2015, and we were very encouraged when 66 Archippuses signed up, representing 32 local churches. This year, AWE2016 will take place over the weekend of 15-17 April at Swiss-Belhotel Batam. [More info at Facebook Events Page]

AWE2015: 28-30 Aug 2015 [Click image for more photos of AWE2015]
In “The Need For Our Own Awakening Event“, I share seven observations from AWE2015 about Familiarity, Authenticity, Exposure, Unity, Focus, Encouragement and Re-commission. Have a read and if these points resonate with you, I’d encourage you to prayerfully consider joining us at AWE2016.

Your desire to be on assignment for the Lord should provide enough reason for you to be at AWE2016. But if you’d like to know the focus of AWE2016, then read my email invitation to all Archippuses on our subscriber list entitled, “What next? How does one discern and identify one’s assignment?

Registrations for AWE2016 are now open and you can register online at https://goo.gl/Kv8TMG. By 18 March 2016 please. Feel free to check with me at archippusawakening@gmail.com if you require more information or clarification. Help share and invite others to AWE2016 too. Thanks for partnering me in the awakening of the saints that more may know and fulfil their God-given kingdom assignments!

Finally, keep us in prayer as we plan towards this Awakening Event, that AWE2016 will truly be an assembly  of Archippuses: Awakened. Aligned. Assigned. Amen!

How Was 2015 For You?

Family at A&W Melaka

Yes, all checked in and nicely settled into what will be my sanctuary over the next two days. As you might have guessed, I am on a personal retreat to rest in the Lord and also to receive from Him. It’s been a full year and I am indeed looking forward to a time of silence and solitude.

And since there’s no better way to get into His presence than to begin with praise and thanksgiving, that’s exactly what I shall do. To be sure, I have experienced so much of the Lord’s love and favour this year. Rejoice with me as I reflect on just 10 highlights of 2015.

1. 20 Years of Marriage: On 11 March, Serene and I celebrated our 20th Wedding Anniversary! Looking back, I still marvel at how we met; and even more significantly, how the Lord drew each one of us, individually and personally, to Himself. This prepared us to embark on a journey of faith and adventure with Him as a larger-than-normal family, a homeschooling family and a ministry family! Whilst Serene has always been supportive and understanding of the ministry demands I face, I confess that I have not always reciprocated adequately to her needs and challenges. I’ve learnt much over 20 years and yet, there are still many areas to improve in. Still, 20 years is a milestone to be celebrated and we will build on the foundation we have in Christ as we enter new seasons of our relationship and the family. [Read more…Marking 20 Years Of Being Together]

2. Me on the Trapeze: Surely, this is worth another mention. This may not seem much to some but at 50 years old, it’s a big deal for me to be able to execute the Knee Hang Catch at Club Med Bintan. Definitely the first and last time I attempt this acrobatic feat! Don’t believe? Watch the video. [Read more…I Believe I Can Fly!]

3. Intergenerational Ministry Trip: In January, the extended Lim Tribe went on a ministry trip to Tacloban Leyte, Philippines as part of TEAM ARCHIPPUS. This was the very first time three generations were involved – my father and mother, myself and three of my children (David, Sarah & Esther). It was really meaningful serving the Lord together as an extended family. [Read more…Houses for the People of Tanauan Leyte: Ministry Trip 22-26 Jan 2015]

4. One Day At A Time registers 200,000 Views: On 28 Sept, this blogsite registered 200,000 hits. Although it takes time to write and contribute articles, I continue to make an effort because I know many have been encouraged along the way. Going forward, it remains a challenge as I do not only manage ONE DAY AT A TIME, but also ARCHIPPUS AWAKENING. So, keep cheering me on by liking and sharing the posts 🙂 [Read more…200,000 Hits: Thanks for Your Support & Encouragement]

5. My Experience of Going Viral (well almost): Within a month of reaching 200,000 hits, someone shared my personal response to the City Harvest Case after the verdict was delivered. Over the next days and weeks, this post garnered thousands of views. As at the time of writing this post, it has exceeded 43,000 views! Not bad for a post written 3.5 years ago, back in 2012. Looks like we will be hitting 300,000 views sooner than expected 🙂 [Read more…A Personal Response to the City Harvest Case]

6. Three Homeschool Achievements: This year registered three milestones for us as a homeschool family. Our eldest, David, completed his High School Diploma as well as his SATs. Esther cleared her PSLE and Ruth, her P4 Exams. All three did very well and I am so proud of them. Of course, Serene deserves mention and definitely, full credit for her hard work. Now, we brace ourselves for David’s NS enlistment next year!

Gold Coast

7. The Lim Tribe Goes Down Under: For obvious reasons, it’s not often we attempt a major holiday for the Lim Tribe. This year, we thought it would be timely for us to venture a little further than the usual church camp escapades and destinations. Although a little last-minute (understandably), we planned and booked everything within two weeks (kudos to Serene again!) and flew off immediately after Esther’s last PSLE paper! Although it wasn’t much of a rest for Serene and myself, we sure appreciated the nice, cool, crisp, fresh air in Gold Coast … before returning to the haze! The children enjoyed the farm stay and most definitely, the theme park rides! Still thanking the Lord for His provision that we can enjoy such an experience.

8. Our Home Church: At the close of 2014, we felt that it was time to look for another home church. We went back to last checkpoint at Full Gospel Assembly and found ourselves staying put there. A key criterion for me was that the pastors and leaders must understand and support my kingdom assignment in Archippus Awakening (which they do!). At the same time, FGA has a vibrant youth and young adults ministry, which works out well for our growing up children. It’s been encouraging to see our children fit in well and involved in the ministries of FGA.

9. Kingdom Connections: On the ministry front, this year has been a time of meeting new people and making new friends. This has been a breath of fresh air as my circle of contacts expanded beyond what I had been accustomed to. I welcome these new exposures as it enlarges my perspective and challenges certain mindsets I may unknowingly hold to. More critically, I sense that the Lord is opening new doors and presenting new frontiers for what He has called me to do. It’s really wonderful to discover like-minded kingdom friends who really stand alongside you, and willing to travel with you on this kingdom journey! [Read more…Kingdom Connections Can Be Messy]

10. Archippus Awakening Milestones: I have already written about this in a separate post on the Archippus Awakening Website so I shall not repeat myself. Suffice to say that it’s been a great year, entirely by the Lord’s grace. Even so, I know that we have only just begun and the new year holds even greater promise for this movement. I just need to hear and move as He directs. Sound easy but it is not quite as straightforward, I assure you. And that’s why I am here on a personal retreat. [Read more…2015: A Season of Sowing]

What a year it has been! I know that the Lord has been with me through it all, and He will continue to walk with me into the new year. One of my favourite messages this season is Trekking Through Transitions, inspired by last year’s year-end reflections. Truly, the God who goes before us is also One who promises to walk closely with us. In that, we can be strong and very courageous to accomplish all He has assigned to us!

How was 2015 for you? May this encourage you too as you make your transition into the new year and into all that the Lord has in store for you!

IN THE LAST DAYS: Why a Worldview Conference by Archippus Awakening?

At first glance, it may appear incongruous. Why is a ministry like Archippus Awakening organising a worldview conference? Have we been bitten by the conference bug? Are we simply offering something for the sake of drawing the numbers? Not at all. Allow me to share my heart and the journey we have undertaken.

Bill Muehlenberg (Culture Watch, Australia): It began at Love Singapore’s Pastors Summit 2015 in January, my first time at this annual affair. Besides the keynote speaker, there were testimonies and sessions by others. Bill Muehlenberg was one of these. As I listened to his presentation on Cultural Marxism, I felt that this was the kind of teaching believers should be exposed to. Although provocative, and possibly controversial too, this would help to awaken many who remain largely unaware of what is happening in these times. Upon my return, I dropped Bill an email invitation to partner us in this effort of awakening and I am glad he readily said ‘yes’.

Our Partners: Along the way, our paths crossed with Leo Hee Khian of Worldview Partners. This dear brother, in many ways, is like the local equivalent of Bill Muehlenberg, engaging culture at the frontlines. Without doubt, Leo is fully convicted to bring worldview education to the Body of Christ. Worldview Partners organised the first worldview conference in 2013 with Dr Jeff Myers of Summit Ministries. Earlier this year, they offered a 15-min Defence Seminar, followed by the inaugural Arise! Issachar Worldview Camp in June. With Leo’s input, the programme has been made even more exciting with testimonies and local panels. We are obviously thrilled to have Leo and his team join us in this awakening effort through this upcoming worldview conference!

Conference Title: The title and theme of the Conference is taken from 2 Tim 3:1, “But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come:…” In warning Timothy, Paul gave the reason in the next verses, “For men will be…” These are the times we are living in and we are experiencing much of what Paul had described. Dig more deeply and you will discover that these behaviours are a result of certain mindsets and philosophies – WORLDVIEWS! For sure, it is no longer business or ministry as usual. In a highly intellectual postmodern world, to simply urge someone to believe and have faith is no longer enough. Ask any parent, educator or youth worker. There is today a need to contend for our faith! Hence, we settled for the bold title, IN THE LAST DAYS: Contending for Our Faith in Perilous Times”.

The Programme: We are aware that believers at large are still not very familiar with worldview and what it entails. To this end, Bill will provide introductory teachings like “Worldview & Cultures” and “Truth and Tolerance” before diving into more specific issues like “The New Atheism” and “Bioethics & New Biotechnologies”. Through the six sessions and other contributions, you can look forward to a time of learning and having your eyes opened (awakened) to the challenges we face in these times. Finally, as always, you will be challenged to respond as a believer. Would you participate in the transformation of the nations, to be a world changer for Jesus and His kingdom? [Note: If you can’t make it for the day sessions, the night meetings are free and open to all.]

An Awakening Event: By now, I hope you understand why Archippus Awakening is organising a worldview conference. It is not just another conference for the sake of having another one. Our mission is to awaken the saints and that is what we hope to do through this event. For many believers, they will still not sign up because these topics sound more technical than appealing. This is because many are still looking for the typical spiritual and personal breakthrough messages that we have grown accustomed to. Sadly, too many are not willing to think or process more deeply, contented to simply go with the flow. This conference is not about what is in it for us but how we are to awakened that we may receive our kingdom assignments to shepherd our families, engage culture and transform nations!

This is where we are today, less than one month to the conference on 19 & 20 Nov 2015. Admittedly, I should have written this post much earlier. Even so, better late than never and there is still time to act. The two-day conference fee has been kept very affordable so that more can attend ($95 per person; $80 per person for groups of 3 or more). Although some may have to take leave, I believe that sacrifice and effort will be well worth it. Night meetings are free and open to all. I pray that you will decide to REGISTER for this conference so you can be equipped for whatever the Lord assigns to you.

Thanks for registering promptly as it will help us in planning and logistics. Visit the conference website www.inthelastdays.org and LIKE our Facebook Page for updates. Thanks for sharing this event with others so that more can be awakened and equipped. We look forward to seeing you at the conference!

Ezekiel the Entertainer?

DSC01268

Imagine this..

You are the Preacher or the Pastor of the hour. Your name has become the latest buzzword in Christian circles. Mention it and people go, “Yes, I’ve heard of him.” You are invited to speak at seminars and conferences, highly sought after, booked two to three years in advance. Your Facebook and YouTube statistics are impressive, not to mention the number of clicks and visits to your website. Your podcasts are well subscribed to and freely shared over social media platforms. Your meetings are well attended because people simply love to hear your anointed messages, and they leave wondering how you got those awesome downloads. Many queue up to be prayed for because you are prophetically sharp.

Sounds good, yes? Which minister wouldn’t desire a ministry and reputation of such impact and influence?

Interestingly, the Bible describes the seeming success of Ezekiel in pretty much the same way: “As for you, son of man, the children of your people are talking about you beside the walls and the doors of the houses; and they speak to one another, everyone saying to his brother, ‘Please come and hear what the word is that comes from the LORD.'” Ezekiel 33:30

As a preacher and teacher of the Word, I must confess that it is all too easy to assess the effectiveness of my ministry by numbers and positive comments. After all, who wants to preach to an empty room? We may declare that it’s not about numbers but truth be told, it is encouraging when the numbers are there. Also, although we are open to feedback and comments, no one likes to be told that his messages are boring, repetitive or ‘not anointed’. Without doubt, I believe Ezekiel did his best and he did exceptionally well. Similarly, we who have the privilege to declare God’s Word must do our very best and not hide behind spiritual or religious excuses.

And yet, more than just popularity and numbers, the Lord is looking for something else, something far more important than sell-out conferences and packed-out churches. In the next verse, He reveals the condition of the hearts of those who flocked to listen to Ezekiel: “So they come to you as people do, they sit before you as My people, and they hear your words, but they do not do them; for with their mouth they show much love, but their hearts pursue their own gain.” Ezekiel 33:31

I think this verse is self-explanatory. I may not have spoken to thousands but I have been to meetings which involved thousands. The speakers are world famous and the atmosphere is highly charged. The amens are resoundingly loud and the altar call is almost always full. But I wonder what happens when the people leave these meetings? Only God knows. All I know is that what is usually reported is the number who attended and how great the meetings or messages were. Could it also be that those who attended “hear your words, but they do not do them; for with their mouth they show much love, but their hearts pursue their own gain”?

“Indeed you are to them as a very lovely song of one who has pleasant voice and can play well on an instrument; for they hear your words, but they do not do them.” Ezekiel 33:32

Ladies & Gentlemen, put your hands together, give it up, for Ezekiel … the ENTERTAINER! Lights, camera, action!

I know I’ve felt like that at times – the hours spent preparing a message, labouring over the Word, consulting commentaries, revising, and then revising again – somehow, the message is never done, never good enough. And then, I get up to the pulpit, deliver it with all my might, preach my heart out and it’s done. The crowd disperses, a few say ‘thank you for the message’ and it’s over. And you start all over again. Sure, it may have been a good message. But how many, I wonder, will actually act on the word? Have Christian meetings become entertainment centres where the audience enjoys what is presented, stirred and moved even, but leave without any desire for action other than to secure a booking or seat for the next show?

Sadly, with the choices and options available these days, preachers and pastors are pressured (directly or indirectly) to perform. If not, there is always the other church, the other ministry, the many other sermons online, the other offering bag. I will do my best, but God forbid that I should be just an entertainer tickling the fancies of the listeners. I will do my part to stay true to the Word and to deliver it without compromise. Even so, I cannot determine how the people will respond. We are so deeply entrenched in Church and Christian culture that many do not realise that they have become hearers and not doers of the Word, deceiving themselves (James 1:22).

Where am I going with this? I suppose I am just reminding myself to keep keeping on, to remain faithful in my assignment, to never to compromise, no matter how challenging it may be. The indicators of success are not numbers or accolades but faithfulness and fruitfulness; and that only happens when people move from merely being hearers to being doers of the Word. In the context of Archippus Awakening, it is when people are not just awakened, but move on to be aligned and then to be on assignment for kingdom. I cannot force or coerce anyone beyond how the Lord will convict or how they each will personally respond. I can only declare what I have been given to declare and these will have to decide their own course of action.

And in the end, no one can say that they didn’t know or that they were not told. Each will be responsible and accountable.

“And when it comes to pass – surely it will come – then they will know that a prophet has been among them.” Ezekiel 33:33
